Job Summary:
The Director of Development and Communications will maintain existing and increase the total number of philanthropic donors and unrestricted gifts to the level necessary for Exceptional Parents Unlimited, Inc. (EPU) to achieve its annual and strategic goals as established by the Board of Directors and the CEO. A parallel responsibility is to assist to create, communicate, and promote the corporate identity and mission/vision to donors, foundations, customers, employees and the public.

Essential Functions:
Development – Administer fund development strategies to generate the revenue necessary to achieve both the annual and strategic goals.

  • Establish and achieve a personal revenue target of approximately $500,000 in unrestricted funding, as determined by the CEO and Board of Directors, and increased annually.
  • Assist in development and implementation of EPU goals and strategies in the areas of major gifts, annual giving, recurring giving, Fiesta De Los Niños, winter campaign, direct mail, information events, donor acknowledgement and the annual report.
  • Responsible for administration of the annual Fiesta De Los Niños event, and other fundraising events throughout the year.
  • Oversee annual direct mail solicitations and increase the number of prospective donors on the mailing list and the annual revenue received, year over year.
  • Develop and grow a program of monthly recurring giving to provide sustainable donated revenue.
  • Assist the Chief Executive Officer in networking with the members of the Board of Directors to identify and develop prospective donors.
  • Follow-up with all prospective donor leads generated through networking, information lunches, campaign events, Fiesta De Los Niños and other activities, always seeking to communicate the mission progress of EPU and provide opportunities for further involvement and giving.
  • Ensure overall results for Exceptional Parents Unlimited, Inc. in fund development.
  • Provide leadership and administrative support to the Fiesta De Los Niños Committee. Maintain an ongoing strategy for increasing the number of sponsors and the annual sponsorship revenue.
  • Develop and promote planned/legacy giving options.
  • Assist in compilation of grant and funding application as needed, with a focus on foundation relationship building and applications.
  • Track progress by maintaining a monthly fund development report, structured for Board reports.
  • Develop and administer a systematic approach to maintaining personal contact with key donors.
  • Oversee the donor data system, ensuring accurate donor records and timely reporting, donor acknowledgments and donation thank you letters.

Communications, Marketing, and Stewardship – Increase the awareness of the mission of EPU in the Central Valley in support of achieving the annual and strategic goals.

  • Help to create and promote the corporate identity and mission to customers/clients, the public, donors, and employees through the creation and distribution of messaging, digital and print content, news releases, and other documents.
  • Oversee and produce, from concept to completion, a broad array of digital and/or print promotional and communication materials for the organization.
  • Ensure that all Agency-published materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the organization and/or brand.
  • Plan, prepare, and distribute original promotional content such as articles, news and press releases, email, blog and social media posts, and other updates on behalf of the organization.
  • Promote and attend special events and functions; promote and report on corporate milestones and activities such as company goals and projects; new products or services; community service activities; and new hires, promotions, and retirements.
  • Arrange for photography and/or press coverage for special events.
  • Keep the Chief Executive Officer apprised of progress, decisions, issues and priorities through regular updates.
  • Provide regular updates to donors and supporters of EPU through an e-newsletter and develop other regular communication methods.
  • Recognize donors through the website, newsletter, social media and the events and activities of EPU.
  • Responsible to oversee, direct, hire, supervise, and evaluate staff members assigned to the department.
  • Must carry out assigned duties and responsibilities in an ethical manner and follow the organization’s policies.
  • Must hold valid California Driver's license and good driving record with no serious violations for the previous two-year period and be able to provide proof of current automobile liability insurance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skill and Experience:
Education: Bachelor’s degree with a major in Business Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or related field. A graduate degree is highly desirable. Extensive related experience and success in fund development also desired.

Skills: Must have strong networking and leadership skills; able to set goals, organize work and manage time appropriately to meet goals; able to develop and maintain effective relationships with community organizations and individuals; be able to make independent decisions within guidelines using sound logic and good judgment skills. Must be able to accept responsibility and associated accountability, be dependable, reliable, committed, and highly motivated. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


  • Four (4) plus years of related experience including sales, knowledge of annual giving, foundation/corporate solicitations, communications and special events.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with digital equipment, database systems, and social medial platforms.
  • Must be extremely proficient with social media and website management, Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be flexible and adapt to new roles, tasks and situations.
  • Experience in remain objective while resolving conflicts.
  • Strong observation, analytical and listening skills.
  • Experience in supervising and train others, including interns and volunteers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Experience in preparing written reports, correspondence and maintain accurate records.
  • Experience in organizing, setting priorities, take initiative and exercise sound, independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Good knowledge of personal computer operations and software including word processing, databases and spreadsheets.
  • Must hold valid California Driver's license and good driving record with no serious violations for the previous two-year period and be able to provide proof of current automobile liability insurance.
  • Experience in managing data and metrics.
